Citrons Orange stone

The November Birthstone: the beautiful Citrine.

The November Birthstone

The November birthstone is the citrine. But, November birthdays (and the 13th Anniversary) are associated with two birthstones: Citrine and Topaz. The warm color of Citrine is said to be a gift from the sun and it’s believed to be a healing gemstone. Topaz is most desired in its rich orange imperial Topaz color but it is found in a variety of rich colors like blue, pink and yellow. They are so close in appearance, and often mistaken for the other, often they are substituted.

Citrine is the transparent, pale yellow to brownish orange variety of quartz.

The Citrine is rare in nature. In the days before modern gemology, its tawny color caused it to be confused with topaz. Today, its attractive color, plus the durability and affordability it shares with most other quartzes, makes it the a very popular yellow-to-orange gem. In the contemporary market, citrine’s most popular shade is an earthy, deep brownish or reddish orange. Here are some examples:

Natural citrine is rare. Most citrine on the market is the result of heat treatment of amethyst. Because it is rare, sometimes topaz and yellow sapphire are used in its place.
